Johnson Controls keeps it hot—and cool

Family home
It’s one of those blustery cold, window-rattling nights, the kind on which the family doesn’t even want to venture out for a nightly walk. A winter storm is building up a full head of steam, bearing down on your town and ... you don’t care.
That’s because you’re battling the elements and warming your home with an air conditioner. Sound odd? Read on.
Johnson Controls manufactures residential heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units called mini-split heat pumps, designed to provide both air conditioning and heating in one convenient unit.

Hot Little Number

A split system is designed to work year-round. Through evaporation and condensation, the heat pump makes the air cold or hot. Whether summer or winter, the system provides a comfortable indoor environment. And speaking of environments, Johnson Controls uses the ozone-friendly refrigerant R410A in its mini-split heat pump systems.
The heat pump consists of an outdoor heat pump section—through which air passes—and an indoor air handler and ductwork connected by two copper pipes where the refrigerant circulates. In addition to other aspects of its design, part of what makes it so efficient is its microprocessor with an on-demand defrost control system; defrosting occurs only when necessary.

Split Decision

Johnson Controls offers a wide variety of mini-split heat pumps for different applications, such as:
  • Whole-house multi-split systems
  • Single-room units that are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms
  • Units using inverter technology. Inverter technology matches electrical supply current to the required heating or cooling capacity so the desired temperature is reached more quickly. For example, if a heating set point is far from the actual indoor temperature, more current intensity will be used, pushing the pump to produce more heat quickly. On the other hand, if the set point isn’t far from the indoor temperature, less energy and current will be used. Thanks to the variable speed compressor, which works continuously at the needed speed, this technology avoids the stops and starts of an on/off compressor, which is very energy consuming.

Johnson Controls also manufactures mini-split heat pumps for business environments, offering a range of high-ceiling, cassette-style and console units, which feature cooling only, heat pump and dehumidifying mode.
