What is HCFC / R22 phase-out?

European legislation, driven by the Montreal Protocol, has established the timely phasing out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that contribute to climate change through ozone layer depletion and global warming. The 1st January 2010 represents the initial deadline that bans the use of new (or virgin) HCFC’s.

HCFC’s (most notably R22) are used as refrigerants in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Owners of such equipment need to take action to ensure they comply with this legislation. Failing to comply will lead to issues maintaining the equipment in operation.
